Here is the best advice you will ever hear...listen to your wife! That gear is half hers and can quickly become ALL hers...along with your music collection.

Seriously, I suspect his advice was due to isolating the amps from vibration and allowing a shorter run of speaker cable to your speakers. This is all well and good, but often not completely practical or aesthetically acceptable to the half owner of your gear.

I wouldn't worry about that so much as I would ensure adequate ventilation for the amps and a rack or platform that can be reasonably coupled to your floor. Even if you don't have a dedicated rack, at least give them ventilation and try to isolate them from obvious vibration.

You will know pretty quick how much space between the components is required to avoid any noisey interaction between them. In most cases, this doesn't become an issue.

Stainless steel for the frame, maple Italian oil finish for the shelf, 1 1/4 " thick, 3 spikes below each feet, the best way to elimnate vibrations.

You can control vibration and eliminate few resonance. The goal is to drive vibrations on one point ...
If you use 4 points below a frame, that's impossible to do, vibrations come back at the original point.

Yes, that would do just fine. Especially if you are on a budget that might preclude you from considering the more expensive stuff.

Speaker stands, though, should be carefully considered if you are going to be using monitors.

With only two pieces of equipment, I'd say to go with a wall mounted shelf/stand and thereby avoid the floor effect completely.

The stands and many pieces of equipment have three points instead of four because three points are always co-planar while four are not.

With four points, you could end up with uneven contact, like a chair or table where one leg is always off the floor.

Equipment doesn't sound right with a matchbook wedged under one of the supports.

I agree with your wife that cleaning under the amp would be a problem. I had the same problem. What I did was to pick up the amp, or the stacked equipment one at a time, and my girlfriend would vacuum or dust under it while I held it.

If she is a reasonable person she'd agree to this, especially as it sort of makes her feel like shes part of the hole thing.
