Hi Simon,
I suggest that you check out:
Jazz Record Center
236 West 26th Street, Room 804
New York, NY 10001
(212) 675-4480
http://Jazzrecordcenter.com
jazzrecordcenter@worldnet.att.net
Open: 10am to 6 pm Monday thru Friday
They have an excellent of anything jazz related, including vinyl, CDs, DVDs, books and calenders.
I asked Fred Kaplan about this. There are lots of stores that sell vinyl LPs in their original pressings. Here are a few Fred recommends (the stores on Bleecker and West 3rd are just a few blocks from one another, and he also recommends the aforementioned Jazz Record Center):
Academy Records
77 E 10th St
Bleecker St Records
239 Bleecker St
Bleecker Bob's
116 W. 3rd St
Rebel Rebel
319 Bleecker St
Jazzfan,
It was great to see you appear again in these forums.
Last we heard I believe you were being "Transported" to the Netherlands. An update would be great, and as always, inquiring minds would love to hear what artists are currently moving you?
The best...
RG
Thx guys,
Jazz record centre was one that kept coming uop on google, and I have a sneaking suspicion I went there about 10 years ago, so will definately search that out
My wife lived in the vilage about 10 years ago,and she remembers lots of places around Bleeker street - looks like they are still there - great stuff
Cheers - and remember to PM me if anyone wants the same kind of info for the UK
Hi Simon,
FYI:
I've found that the (used) record stores in the Village, i.e. Bleeker Street area, tend to price their vinyl anywhere from somewhat expensive to just plain outrageous with very few, if any, bargains. On the other hand, both The Jazz Record Center (JCR) and Academy Records, do offer the occasional bargain along with their more expensive (but still quite reasonable) fare. In addition, the JRC has most of it's selection very carefully organized so finding what you're looking is pretty easy.
Thanks for the replies
Had a great time, and went to all the places recommended both here and in PM's
nowhere was "bad", but 3 places really stood out:
Second hand rose - got somne real nice original blue notes
other music - really eclectic selection - great place if you want to expand your taste
Academy records - excellent stock - got lots of classical vinyl, as wellas some jazz - very reasonable prices
I also went to Chicago, to visIt the work head-office, and managed to get down to the Jazz Record MART
In the end I had to get another suitcase to carry it all - just as well the wife is the understanding sort
If anyone ever wants the same info on London please let me know
Cheers
