You know JoeE, if I thought you had the basics of economics under you belt I would get into this argument with you. You seem to think economic cycles are based on who is in office. Example, you're under the assumption that the levees broke during a Republican Administration without even commenting that the levees were constructed under two Democratic Adminstrations. Example, New Orleans was flooded in 1947 by a hurricane and the after the storm, hurricane-protection levees were built along Lake Pontchartrain's south shore to protect the city. In 1965, Hurrican Betsy had a 10 foot storm surge in New Orleans and again the city was flooded. It was this time that the levees encircling the city and outlying parishes were raised to heights of 14 to 23 feet. To save costs the levees were built for Category 3 hurricanes. Hurricane Katrina was a Category 5 and the levees held. Katrina quickly reduced to Category 3 upon landfall and that was when the levees started to give way. So, we have two Democratic Administrations building the levees and a Republican Administration that had the misfortune of being blamed for the whole thing. As you can see, risks were taken like an insurance company against acts of god, and there was nothing anybody could have done any different in such a short time span after Bush was elected to make sure this didn't happen. Based on your ideology of blame you have two periods when a Democrat was president during the construction of the levees to build them to withstand maximum force but didn't to save money. The bottom line is the levees were not constructed correctly for the City of New Orleans. Nobody is blameless. Including the State of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans. We still live in a Republic; i.e. local governments are responsible for disaster preparedness and FEMA provides support and funding to those local governments that comply with their requirements. No different than the federal government passing a law suggesting that state governments set a speed limit. Failure by a state to abide by that law will result in that state losing funding for such things like state highways.

Economic decisions by presidents of the past due eventually have economic consequences in the future. For example, Carter stopped any new gasoline processing plants decades ago. That ended up with supply not meeting demand decades later and the markets exploiting like any market does. You can't discuss economic trends based only who was president last time. In fact, the government, until lately, played a minor role in economics for the most part. A president need only have an understanding of micro and macro economics 101 to be President. This time though it was actually Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that was abused by the government that led to the housing crisis and created the domino effect we are seeing today. This abuse occurred across party lines. It had been going on for quite some time and the worse of it occurred during a Democratic controlled House and Senate since you prefer that line of approach. You do remember Barnie Frank (D) stating that Fanny Mae was doing just fine a couple of years ago? You also seem to be under the assumption that it is the responsibility of the government to repair economics at any cost. When left alone the invisible hand of supply and demand will take care of itself. Can you state who came up with that theory?

I would also advise you to consider that government, in general, is extremely nonproductive and we shouldn't put too much faith in their hands to fix problems for us. As for political parties it would be foolish to place blame on them. Political parties are just that. They are not the government. The Republican Party is not a government entity. It is an organization of ideology that strives to lead the country no different than Democrats. In that aspect I am very critical. But I make sure and do a little homework before posting incoherent talking points you read or heard someplace. You are not a very well read person. In fact, you are borderline ignorant. While getting my masters degree recent and current economics were some of the things I was required to study.
