Good call on Echoes.

"Brain Damage/Eclipse" from Pink Floyd's Dark Side also offers an emotional climax that is cathartic.

"How Many More Times" from Led Zeppelin's first album.

It is hard to compete with those Beatles and Floyd picks but here are a few of my picks for good closers:

Roxy Music, the song "For Your Pleasure", ending the album of the same name.

A beautiful extended version of this also closed their live concert as recorded on the DVD Roxy Music Live at the Apollo.

"Got To Be Free" from Lola vs. Powerman (The Kinks)
"Sister Ray" from White Light/White Heat (Velvet Underground)
"Sexy Results" from You're a Woman, I Am a Machine (DFA '79)
"Time of the Season" from Odessey & Oracle (The Zombies)
"I Didn't Understand" from XO (Elliott Smith)
"Take Care" from 3rd/Sister Lovers (Big Star) *"Thank You Friends" was the actual closer on original LP, but Alex Chilton wanted "Take Care" to close
"Tomorrow Never Knows" from Revolver (The Beatles)

but my favorite closer is "Videotape" from Radiohead's In Rainbows, because the song - with its tape loop & the message contained within - implies that the present moment never ends, the music, the album, the song. Perfect.

Blogged about it here a while back, if you're curious:

I noticed that that's been re-issued on vinyl. I have to pick it up.

I'll have to go home and consult my records, but lately, I've loved the way TV On The Radio's new album, Dear Science, closes with "Lover's Day."

Amen to that. The song "Family Tree" is my favorite song of this year, by a considerable margin. What a touching, but scary song...

Ok, how about:

Tender Surender from Steve Vai's "Alien love secrets"

Killer album full of powerhouse tunes with this melodic, crying guitar sending the listener off like slow acting cyanide,...Ya know the end is near and you are trying to will it to not arrive.
Or:

"A murder of one" from Counting Crows "August and Everything After"

By far their best record and after this tune plays I can't help myself from listening to the whole thing again. Ahhhh

YES!!!

Hey, did you see Eddie Vedder do that song on The Who Honors show?

Home run, and I'm not a big Eddie fan.

Killer answer, man.

Thanks, Buddha, Ariel!
That album is easily my favorite by The Who, and the whole angry, confused, male teen theme is resolved perfectly by that song.

No, I haven't heard any covers of that song. (I Just watched Betty's very soulful version, but I'll take the Who's version anyday.)

Right now, I'm listening to "One Thing Never Changed" from The Pretenders' latest LP, Break Up the Concrete, in my office. Makes me travel down the Regret Boulevard, I'm telling you... a really simple song, but so affecting. Hynde's still got it.

Sorry about that Buddha, however I guess that makes "Glad Tidings" the best closing song since it's the only one with two votes!

And thanks for the compliment. While I may be known around this forum as somewhat of an expert on jazz, I did grow up listening to (and still listen to) quite a bit of "classic rock" so when it comes to rock music from about the mid-1960's to the early 1980's (which is about the time that I kind of gave up on rock music and focused most of my listening time on jazz) I can still hold my own. Just don't ask me anything about rock music from about the mid-1980's and on because except for a handful of artists I'm pretty much at a loss.

Simple Minds, OMD, The Smiths, Tool, Pearl Jam and tons more - I haven't a clue!

David Murray, Ornette Coleman, John Zorn, Don Pullen, Dave Douglas, Dave Holland and tons more - now you're talking.
