It looks to me like this loudspeaker has a port and therefore is not an acoustic suspension speaker. If you are going to spend that kind of money I'd listen to the Vandersteen 2Ce Signature or Triangle Antel or Celius.

Well, I'm not even sure what the price is.....and on their website, it states that it's "..their proprietary, acoustic suspension design..", so, that wasn't only coming from me...

There are no Triangle, or Vandersteen dealers here....

The Ergo 609DC is a very well-sorted-out loudspeaker. The engineering is solid and the cabinet and drivers are superb. I've never auditioned the Talon, so I'm not making a comparison.

Could you listen to Paradigm Studio 100s at Wilson Audio in Metairie? They might be able to audition the Vandersteen 2Ce Signatures for you as well. I think he has a demo pair with stands in excellent condition for $1000. If you wanted them new you could just listen to them at Wilson's and if you like them buy them new.

Thanks Wes....I'm assuming you've actually heard these speakers before. Can you tell me your impression of the bass response? (for 2-channel music; Classic rock, hard rock), is it capable of strong, deep bass? I'll be driving the Canton's with a Krell, KAV400xi.

Jackfish....familiar with the area, eh? Yes, I bought my NAD CD player there....I've seen the Vandersteens you spoke of, but they never really spoke much of them. They always push the "Maggies"! Two of the best speakers I heard there, were some small bookshelfs, from System Audio; AWESOME little speaker! And, the Spendor S8e. Both were driven by ARC amps.....

Sorry, Danny. I thought it was clear that I had heard the 609s, since I specified that I had not heard the Talons, so I wasn't comparing them. Yes, I have heard them.

People percieve "sufficient bass" differently, but if you are using the Krell KAV400 and your room isn't huge, then yes, I would say the 609s would rock well.

Enjoy the hunt.

Wes,

My room is 24' Deep, and 17' wide....not huge by any means. My listening/sitting position, is 9' in front of where they will be placed.

It would be nice to see Stereophile review these speakers !

Thanks Again!

Perhaps, they don't want you to hear the Vandersteens because then you might not buy their more expensive speakers with greater margins? If I were you I'd at least give the Vandersteen 2Ce Signatures a try.

I may do that. Is that what you have?

The 10" bass driver in the bottom; is that active, or passive?

I do not have the Vandersteens, but have listened to them and lust after them. I'd really like the 3As.

From Stereophile: "The bottom enclosure is for the rear-facing 10" driver that Vandersteen refers to as an "Active Acoustic Coupler." It is, as the name implies, actively driven though it shares some of the characteristics of a passive radiator. Since the AAC is designed to cover primarily the range below 35Hz, it could be called an integral subwoofer. Perhaps Vandersteen chose to give it another designation to distinguish it from the company's dedicated, outboard subwoofers."

Well, in the Stereophile review, from January, the reviewer J. Atkinson, I think, said that these speakers should be placed away from all room bounderies. This is not an option for my room.
He knows more than I do, so.......
