Sutherland DLS volume display

When I originally finished this article I was very interested in this product except for one nagging question. How do I see the level of the volume control? I reread the article only to discover that this important piece of information is not present. I downloaded the manual from the supplied web site and found this piece of information:

"The Director uses a 16 LED bar graph to
indicate volume level. Musicality takes precedence over marginally
useful digital minutia. There are a total of 128 volume settings
available on The Director, giving a volume control range of
78 db."

Considering 16 LED's have to represent 128 levels of information, how is this information presented on the front panel? Does it work well or not?

Maybe I'm used to digital displays on my audio gear, but I was hoping for a better explanation of this in the article.

Each LED represent 8 levels. Works fine for everyday listening, but not for level-matched comparisons, if that's an issue for you.
