Sub for Kappa 5.1's

I run a two channel onkyo (tx8522) and infinity kappa 5.1 speakers. I'm looking to add a sub. My amp has no LFE so I need a sub that i can run speaker wire into and out of. I listen to lots of music and I want a fast sub. I'm willing to spend good money, 5 or 6 hundred on a used high quality unit. Reccomendations?

It will be in an apartment for a little while, but I don't want to buy a small sub now only to need something more powerful in the next few years.

I'm looking at the martin logan abyss. Can I run speaker while from the b speaker outputs of my onkyo to this sub and run A + B? Is this a musical sub?

The Martin Logan Abyss subwoofer is underperforming at its price point, which at $823 is well above $500-600. The SVS PB12-NSD/2 (in clearance for $799) and HSU VTF-3 HO ($810) will outperform the Abyss. The SVS PB12-NSD is likely the best sub available at $600. Both SVS and HSU subs are known for integrating well with most loudspeaker systems.

You know, for approx the same money that you've budgeted for a sub, you can get Kappa 8 and that would eliminate a need for a sub. Is that a viable option for you?

Either the SVS or the Hsu. I'd give the edge to the SVS.

The fastest, most accurate subs that I've heard are almost all built by REL. They also PREFER to use a speaker level connection, the one that you have to use. When properly set up a REL completely disappears as a source of sound. It doesn't sound like you have a sub, it sounds like your main speakers just increased their response. They have subs in your price range. Check them out they are the sub for people who hate subs.

Yup, I saw a pair for 499 the other day. I really want those, but then I gotta find decent power to run them. Could always start out with the optimus pa amps for starters though.

You could probably get the power and the speakers for the price of the subs. Furthermore, the high-mid-bass integration is going to be a lot better on a full range speaker than with a satellite/sub combination.

Excellent, the REL's are by far superior to anything else I've heard.
