Recommended Strobe?

Was wondering if any of you good folks could help me out with a recommendation of a good speed strobe.

I borrowed Robert's 20-year-old Linn strobe to check the speeds on my Artist and was dismayed to see a perceptible amount of wow, about two lines per revolution. While small in absolute terms (I think I calculated it to be less than 0.3%) it did make me wonder what could be causing it. Since the deck has a servoed DC motor I suspected a mechanical problem rather than an electrical one and carefully checked the platter for eccentricity, platter bearing alignment etc. Well, the deck is certainly made with extraordinary precision; no problems there!

I asked Robert who said that the strobe had shown the same thing on every deck he had ever set up and that he had concluded it was an inherent inaccuracy in the strobe. Finally, Pierre Lurn

HI Struts

I use the LYS Gyrascope, and love its simplicity and looks. Stupid expensive now, almost doubled in price since I have bought mine acouple of years ago.

The other I would buy that is affordable in comparison to the LYS is the KAB.

Both can be used while the stylus is in the groove.

Thanks Paul. Can't seem to find anyone near here that stocks the LYS, I'll see how much it is to order directly from France. I didn't know the KAB could measure under load and ruled it out - I'll give it another look. The best option I've found which is available locally looks like being the Clearaudio which fulfils all my criteria.

The KAB is put on top on of your records, it is a 10" disc so you have the room to check speed while the sylus is in the groove on you records. It has a battery operated strobe light.

I had missed that, thanks. By the way, I posted some photos of the rest of my system over in the Gallery.
