Very nice. I'm looking forward to reading your opinions on the new album.
The Decemberists are among the very small set of current non-jazz groups that I find worthwhile. In fact, while my wife and I were living in the Netherlands we went to see the Decemberists at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. They put on an excellent show, although Colin did get just a bit carried away with the mostly Dutch audience's willingness to engage in a sing along (I really hate sing alongs and all other forms of audience participation - other than applause).
Based on your description ("17-song suite with a narrative, kind of like a rock opera") it sounds like they're expanding on the mini-suites that they have been using up to this point (The Crane Wife, The Island).
I also love the fact they release everything on good quality vinyl.
Love these guys. Please accept and do a write-up! I've also had a good experience with their vinyl releases.
DUDE. can I come over?? I must hear.
Would love to have you over, but re-located to northern NJ... not to mention that I'm not putting in ass-hours at work, leaving not enough time to schedule play...
bummer. well i'm used to NJ Transit if that counts. but its cool. a follow up will be almost as good. looking forward to hearing about it.
I've been listening to this for a few days now (I guess the vinyl shipped early). I think it's fantastic. It reminds me a lot of Crane Wife - I only realized after the first listen that it was also based on a fable. They experiment with some more traditional rock-type sounds (certain types of guitar distortion I hadn't really heard from them before, etc.), but they also hold on to that eclectic touch. Really, really worth getting. And the sonics are really great on the vinyl release (haven't heard the digital).
