NAD C270 vs C325BEE to Start

Hi, I'm starting to gather ideas for a system.

I'm thinking either a NAD C270 amp or a NAD C325BEE integrated as a starting point.

Can a component be plugged directly into the variable input of the C270, and controlled well enough with the input level knob, or do I need a preamp? This would be just to get started. I'd like to wait for the preamp until I find a really good deal.

If I went the C325BEE way, would it be useful later as a preamp with a separate amp, or would it be a limiter?

My initial thought for speakers would be the Athena Technologies AS-B1.2 based on GoodSound.com's recommendation.

Best sound for value is my primary criteria, and ability to build up the system modularly is second.
