I have been very pleased with Cambridge Audio Azur 640C v2. I paid $550 two years ago. Audio Advisor is now offering at $400

I know you said < $300, but if at all possible save your pennies and buy a used Marantz SA-8001 when you can.
(There's one on Audiogon right now for $575 obo - including shipping!)
That player competes with $1500 CDPs and is a steal on the used market. I own one and it is as good as everyone says.

Accessories4less has refurbed Marantz DV6001 universal players for $199. I paid $249 a while back and thought that was a steal.
