Favorite composer?

Tough day today (taking care of a sick-but-not-too-sick 3-year-old) so I badly needed to decompress. Was listening to Bach's Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (BWV 61) far too loudly on the headphones when Alice (my 6-year-old) came in and we listened together. It was a great father-and-daughter bonding moment, although it stung my conscience to be reminded how much I hope she fulfills my ambitions as a frustrated musician.

However it also gave me cause to reflect that I really couldn't get through life without Bach. To deal with the death of a close friend or relative I always turn to his G major Cello Suite, going on holiday has me reaching for the Italian Concerto etc. It seems whatever my mood the man has a piece of music for the occasion. It reaches into my soul deeper than most other music put together.

So, in answer to that awful hypothetical question "If you could only have one..." my answer has to be Johann Sebastian.

Who's your 'must have' composer and why?

Re: Favorite composer?

It's Bach for me, as well.

Late works of Beethoven, Brahms and R. Strauss do something strange to me, too.

Dont have a single guy but for me its the Russian's

Russian music just seems to be so focused, they set out with a mission and thats exactly what they do. The music has such energy.

Bach and earlier.

I'm just not a romantic sort of guy.

Re: Favorite composer?

Haydn, an accomplished Enlightenment man.

Beethoven and Mozart would be next in my affections. However, I get to listen to all sorts of music so ranking composers isn't a practical necessity.

Haydn is wonderful!

My guess is that most of us listen to just about every composer out there, with heavier rotation of some.

Re: Favorite composer?

As I started reading the thread, I was thinking about Haydn, but thought nobody would choose him. The answers took a great twist!

Haydn 88/89 are, for whatever odd reason, my two favorite symphonies, and they are even sequential!

When DG released an 88/89 LP back in 1978 (79?) or so that was an epic release for me!

Dang, I can't find a pic of the cover!

Thanks for liking Haydn!

Re: Favorite composer?

I think more in terms of pieces than composers.

Tallis' Spem in Alium is the music that never fails to give me chills, but I doubt if I could name three other things he did.

I probably listen to Mozart's Dissonance Quartet more than anything else by him.

Beethoven's late string quartets (especially #14, #15, and the Grosse Fuge) are beyond incredible, but the violin concerto has sat unplayed on my iPod for about a year.

My favorite Bartok, strangely enough, is the viola concerto.

Bach's cello suites, violin partitas, and the Goldbergs are incredible. I can't think of one time that I've listened to the Well-Tempered Clavier for pleasure, though.

Messiaen's organ music is some of the deepest stuff I've heard, but the big orchestral pieces don't do it for me.

I can't think of a single well-known composer that I am totally uncritically nuts about. Even Bach had his duds. Even the Beatles had some bad cuts. Some of the composers I'd call favorites are thus comparatively minor (like Ligeti or Janacek).

Great response, Lionel. I bet we all resemble your mixture of preferences.

On Haydn, I have the remastered Dorati complete set of symphonies which can be had, on occasion for around $30! (33 disks). Nice solid set of performances and it is great fun to rummage around and sample them - a perfect role for a music server.
