Fall, 2010...on deck...

It's going to be a smash up fall this year for new releases.

The new Neil Young is nigh.

A new Eno disc is coming, as is a new Bryan Ferry.

If you like the last Jerry Lee Lewis release, the new is said to be even better.

More Kings of Leon coming up (I admit to not digging the last album, but remain a fan.)

Also - rumor has it that Elton John has re-energized Leon Russell and they have a disc coming out! (I hope they union serves them well.)

New Elvis Costello on the way.

For my kids, the new Black Eyed Peas is on the way.

My wife likes Kid Rock and he has a new one coming.

Daft Punk and Stereolab have discs coming soon.

And, perhaps closest to my heart....Social Distortion!

Gonna be a great fall season.

Elton and Leon? That will be interesting, a home run or a strikeout. I like some Jerry Lee, looking forward to that. Just got the new Neil Young, not usually a fan of Daniel Lanois productions, but this one's a winner.

Some have the store....

The Leon/Elton disc got a five star rating from Rolling Stone; a rare thing. I wouldn't go that far, but my joy over hearing Leon with his heart beating again is rapturous!

To answer in accordance with being an audiophile: The sound seems very compressed, even in the car. It makes the music seem kind of relentless and monochromatic. It robs it of drama.

Leon sounds better than he has in 20 years. Elton is nearly done becoming Andrew Lloyd Webber.

There is alot of straight up metaphor and simile. It is so noticeable, it can sometimes takes away from the emotional context of many songs. (That might be why so much country music leaves me flat.) Then again, they may have done that on purpose to get a country feel....so...

There is some vintage Leon piano sound. It's amazing how someone can play a piano within a 2 dB dynamic range. That's gotta take some skill.

The boys sound very energized and they capture some gospel joy and Leon can really harmonize behind Elton - really terrific.

Cut #3 is terrific - it would make a great tune in a Baptist service (which I mean as a total compliment.) It has energy and verve. It sounds a little like "Gimme Shelter," if you are a Stones fan. Google "Hey Ahab" and tell me what you think.

"Gone to Shiloh" could have been on any vintage Leon album (another compliment.) This cut has the best surprise of any rock cut I've heard this year - DO NOT GOOGLE ANY INFO ABOUT THE SONG UNTIL YOU CAN JUST FLAT OUT PLAY IT FIRST. IF YOU PLAY A VIDEO, DON'T LOOK THE FIRST TIME. This song needs to be heard and not seen the first time.

Ok....the more I write about the disc, the more I realize how much I enjoy having Leon back in my life.

4/5 stars.

______

A secret gem is the new Jerry Lee Lewis disc.

Think of it as one step below Roy Orbison

Happy day!

If you like Bryan Ferry then you will like the new "Olympia" disc....featuring the first cuts with the old Roxy Music line-up since 1981!

Smooooooth, not overly compressed sounding, full of that feeling you get from listening to Bryan Ferry.

I am vey happy.

The new Eno is of a kind with his ambient work, despite what reviewers have called a more "rocking" sound - it's still chill out music. If you like instrumental Eno, this is right up your alley. If you like vocal Eno, take a pass.

Something I like about Olympia that I didn't mention before....

I first listened to it in the Honda and it was cool, smooth Bryan.

Then, I got a chance to play it on the Hi Fi and there are cuts (especially the first track) that have that perfect Roxy Music / Bryan Ferry "burn," where the music turns out to be intensely rocking, so much so that it catches you almost "unawares" of just how hard it's hitting you until after you are well into the cut.

I find that to actually be a very rare commodity in popular music and appreciate it when I come across it.

It also points out what a Hi Fi can do in terms of conveying "intensity" even when it can otherwise seem to be hidden behind some ex-glam crooner's chill out sound.

If you liked Bete Noir, you'll really like Olympia.

Flea is in fine form on the bass on this album, as well.

Is the new Elvis out?

Time to shop at my local independent record store!

For Norah, all I have to do is wait a few weeks and I'll get to hear plenty of it in most of the rooms at CES.
