Do you have to keep your system at less than the optimum listening level at home? Why?

Last week's question about car systems prompted many readers to respond that their car is the only place where they can crank up an audio system. Are you restricted to quieter-than-ideal listening levels at home?

I HAVE A THREE YEAR OLD AT HOME.SO WHEN HE GOES TO BED,THE VOLUME GOES DOWN.UNFORTUNATELY THAT'S WHEN I DO MY MOST LISTENING.

It is a matter of courtesy. When someone is trying to sleep it is rude to have the system cranked.

First it was the parents, now its the neighbors\landlords. What's the difference?

Listening volume is determined by the presence or absence of my close apartment-dwelling neighbours . . . except when new equipment turns up.

I just use headphones if the volume would upset my spouse. What's the problem? Buy a decent set of cans.

I can't understand the poll:What means "optimum"? Very stupid question!!!

The question of restriction depends on WHO is restricting. Mostly, it is ME. In order to avoid disturbancing others, I make it a point to lower the volume after 10 PM. I couldn't enjoy the musical experience if I was aware that someone else is suffering.

With 104/dB/W speakers and six monoblock amplifiers in a triamplified configuration, volume is not a problem.

...except for when the wife is home... She does not care to hear ir NEARLY as loud as I do. Otherwise you can't even hear it at the street!

Because I'm 16 and my dad believes that any sounds above 85 decibels are horrid (and I'm tring to listen to jazz not death metal like normal teens).

To my deep regret, I married the wife from hell.

I live in a Condo with folks above and below. The building is double insulated between floors and units, so I don't create much of a problem. I seldom run my system over 85 DB C at 6 feet. LLarson Mpls.

my wife is not a fan of loud music in the house. To solve this problem I am converting a detached garage into a listening room/ home theatre.

The advantages to Palm Beach Florida where they may not be able to vote properly, but my neighbors are hard of hearing.

Living in a townhouse I usually have to reach for the Phones after 10pm or so. But before that I have very understanding neighbors and usually listen to my DVD's at reference level. I tend to play my SACD's pretty loud too, but wouldn't you?

Condos are the pits when you have a nice stereo.

I have converted the attic into my sound room. No problem with sound levels.

What most people call loud is actually distortion (found aplenty in car systems!). When my system "sounds loud," I back off the amplifier and look for the source of the distortion.

my car stereo sounds better than yours

Both my wife and I love music at realistic levels. So, in addition to not having kids, we also made a point of buying a house with a great listening room where we can listen as loud as we like. Great fun!
