Cheap Pioneer DV 578 CD/SACD/DVD-Audio player as transport?

Hello all,
I've been wondering how feasible it would be to use my cheap Pioneer DVD player as a transport. Of course, it has the digital out but does that digital out include the hi-rez formats also? And are there affordable DACs that handle SACD and DVD-Audio as well as "redbook" CDs?
These may be stupid questions but I'm new to hi-rez digital formats.
BTW, The player sounds pretty good with the hi-rez stuff but I find that it makes a bad CD player. Sounds thin on 16/44 PCM. Even if I hook a DAC up to it for 16/44 PCM I would be happy.

Yes,you can use it as a transport but no,it won't output hi-rez.In fact, nothing outputs hi-rez format in digital form except some proprietary interefecases such as Denon's Link3 etc.As for the Pioneer as a cd player, are you sure you have it configured properly? On thing Pioneer are known for is their ultra sweet/not-thin sound.Notice,i didn't say "thick" i said "not-thin"

Thnx for clearing that up! That's a shame.

I believe that I do have it set up correctly. I'm using the "2 channel" jacks on the back and there isn't anything in the settings that I could see that would affect CD sound through those jacks. [unless I missed something]
I certainly wouldn't call the sound I'm getting "sweet" more like dry and thin. In fact, comparing it to an old JVC player that I have here the JVC sounds "sweet" compared to the Pioneer.
I have burned DVD-Audio disks of 16/44 content and I notice that they sound much better than CDs on the Pioneer.
I dunno...

1. I tend to agree with LM2940 on the sound of the Pioneer.

2. To add to what Yiangos said about Digital Output of Hi Res formats.... It is Illegal

The SACD & DVD-A formats spercifically prohibit digital outputs in consumer equipment...

That's not true. Last September, HDMI v1.2 was approved for digital transmission of SACD. While there is no product on the market that supports such an interface, it's perfectly legal. BTW, Oppo Digital's $150.00 HD970 universal player outputs SACD digitally via HDMI v1.1, despite downsampling the DSD data to PCM.

Otherwise, Pioneer Elite, Onkyo, Sony ES and Denon all had players that can output DVD-A and/or SACD digitally. Panasonic even has a DVD-A player that will transmit DVD-A signal digitally to its digital amp in the digital domain.

Seems I read somewhere that the Pioneer 578 downsamples DSD to PCM. Which was a bit of a bummer to find that out but for $100...
Anyway, if DSD is converted to PCM you wouldn't think there would be a legal issue with providing the PCM via a Digital Out jack.

Hmmmm,i'm not gonna argue about that.I only have experience with 3-4 "Elite" series models.Perhaps the "normal" ones do sound thin.
