Hey why does old Art D think BOC is metal? Sure they inspired some metal acts but the music while great is not metal it hard rock. So you say [BOC partly redeemed this genre]I asume you mean metal not hard rock. Metal gets no respect though it deserves much. So many audiophiles listen to 60-70s rock, little girl with piano or whatever the press praises at the moment. To me over looking metal and its huge contribution to modern music just shows a narrow musical mind set. Sure we all have likes and dislikes but metal never gets anything but slamed by the audio press. So I totaly agree with Arts statement. [even the most well informed critics are not only failible but potentional foolish] maybe the B.O.C. comment would fall into this. Still I enjoy Art D just think he needs someone to bust his chops over his lack of metal knowledge;) And if you want a list of quality metal to open your mind and ears email me...
Acknowledged and I think you're mostly right (BOC went through changes in sound, etc over the years), but on the other hand the categorization doesn't matter that much. Genres blend and merge and overlap. If we talk metal (for instance), then it's possible to get into all the subgenres of that and dispute if so-and-so belongs in death metal vs. black metal etc!
I always thought BOC was some fusion of metal and Prog...

Dude, where ya bin? They even got their own SNL (that's Saturday Night Live ) skit with the tagline "more cowbell!."
Classical music nerd here. Thus little knowledge of rock, etc. But I like learning and exploring.
Even worse for lack of cultural awareness, I can't stomach Saturday Night Live; to Middle School for me.
The Box of Cigars (BOCs) are on their way!
"The Box of Cigars (BOCs) are on their way!"
Heheh, that's great. Well, I don't claim to be a FAN of B.O.C., just familier. You should see School of Rock, both because it's funny, actually in middle school, and will educate you in the basics of rock. Plus all the kids in it are mostly former classical music nerds themselves so you'll relate.
SNL doesn't usually do it for me much either, although on occasion all the stars line up and it's about as funny as you can get!
Metal has been so reviled by the mainstream press that I don't think BOC would want to be called metal if they were coming out with Agents of Fortune today. Back in the 70's, though, they were certainly considered metal. Like everything else, the best in metal is very good (BOC, Black Sabbath) and the worst is dismal.
Still I disagree I know we can classify music any way we want. But even Black Sabbath didnt know they where metal till the phrase was coined. As far as I know stepenwolf came up with the term heavy metal thunder. But as I classify metal bands Deep Purple, BOC not metal. Sabbath, Priest, MotorHead, Saxson Iron maiden early metal. BOC, Zeplin, D.P. not metal just hard rock. I own almost all of BOCs work nothing metal at all just great music. Whats Metal about Deep Purple or Zep they also get lumped into metal by the press like VH 1 and nothing metal at all in this music. Just because these bands may have infuanced metal bands doesnt mean they started it.
