Amp: no sound, not even through headphones

hello - i have a sony surround sound DVD system w/surround sound speakers for this DVD player - TV connected. i just purchased a Sony CD player and a Sony STR-AV770X Receiver/Amp Manual, and i have a Stanton turntable.

i only have the surround speakers that belong to the DVD player so i hooked up everything this way:

Turntable into Amp (Phono In)
CD Player into Amp (CD In)
Amp out (using Graphic Equalizer Adaptors Out) to DVD Player (Satellite Input - In)

I set the Sony Surround Sound DVD Player to Satellite and can use the surround sound speakers for all the equipment. So far so good.

Issue: The volume is being controlled by the DVD Player for the audio equipment. The volume from the Amp does not seem to be working at all. Even when I plug in the headphones to the front of the Amp there is the faintest sound with the Amp volume maxed. The Amp speaker selection is A+B, A or B, or OFF. Regardless of the speaker setting the same faint sound is heard. Also, the mute is definitely off. there are no speakers directly connected to the Amp and I am wondering if this is necessary to hear sound from the headphones. There is no remote to the Amp although it was originally sold with one.

The headphones work fine when using the headphone/input on the CD player but nothing from the Amp.

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

The output of the receiver you've chosen to use, which is a correct choice similar to "tape out", is not affected by the volume control on the receiver. Why do you want to have two places to control volume? If the DVD system is operating correctly and controls the overall volume, isn't that all you need? Your system set up makes no sense so it's not easy to follow what you're trying to achieve with this system. Why don't you just connect all your speakers to the AV receiver?

Re: Amp: no sound, not even through headphones

jan - thank you for your post. the reasoning is this - i only have the set of surround speakers that are propriatary to the DVD system. i want to use these speakers (which are very good) for all the components. therefore, i ran the amp out to the DVD player through the adaptor output.

i hope this explains the reasoning.

the issue is that i am not getting any sound out of the headphone jack from the amp. so i cannot listen to the cd player or the turntable through the amp with the headphones. my question is this - can it be possible that speakers HAVE to be in place before the headphone input will work? i suppose the next logical step is for me to get a set of speakers and test it.

Try pressing the Tape monitor button and see if that helps things.

It's very unlikely a pair of speakers are required to allow the headphone output to operate. This would appear to be a switching problem. You have far too many selections with most Sony receivers and it's very easy to get lost when trying to figure out what should be selected and what should not. Using a receiver, the easiest source to use is the tuner as it should always be live. Tape monitor is the most common problem with this sort of problem. As suggested above engage and disengage the tape monitor to check for sound. After that, have you read the owner's manual?

It would help considerably if you took this system apart and used only the receiver. I still can't understand why you're connecting this system to use the rear speakers of the DVD system when you apparently do not own a pair of front speakers. Seems a bit like buying gasoline and then deciding what car to buy to put the fuel into. I believe you'll find the problem much simpler to diagnose if only the Sony receiver is being used.

Re: Amp: no sound, not even through headphones

I unhooked everything from the amp. Again, I do not have a seperate set of speakers but only the DVD player proprietary set.

I set the amp to Tuner - I could see that it was finding a station and the levels were moving. I plugged in the headphones, turned up the volume, and nothing. Therefore I am thinking that this amp is crap. The headphones work fine when used with the CD player. Thoughts?

If you are certain you have all selector switches in the correct position, read the owner's manual one more time. If you still get no sound, repair or replace.

Re: Amp: no sound, not even through headphones SOLVED!

so the problem was the jumpers. the adaptor outputs have 2 sets of jumpers for in/out/r/l - it is VERY easy to place the jumpers vertically when they should be placed horizontally. a flaw in design most definitely.

now i just need some speakers =]

jan, thanks for all the posts. much appreciated.
