Affordable record clamps

Hello All-

I'm looking for an affordable (less than $50) record clamp to go with my Pro-Ject 1.2. The two that I've seen that might fit the bill are:

KAB USA (whom I know nothing about):

Clearaudio: Clever Clamp

Does anyone have any experience with either of these or other suggestions? In case it affects the answer I am using a Audioquest Sorathane record mat, which I'm not married to.

Re: Affordable record clamps

I bought the Souther Clever Clamp many years ago, and while I could hear a small improvement, it's nothing like a "real" record clamp. If you can stretch your budget a little, I'd recommend the Sota I-Clamp, at $80.

Other than music isn't this hobby all about stretching the budget?

What are your experiences with the Sota?

Re: Affordable record clamps

I haven't heard the i-clamp on a familiar system, but it seems to work the same way my sota reflex clamp works. A small rubber washer goes over the spindle between the record and platter, and the clamp presses down on the periphery of the label, forcing the entire surface of the record into contact with the platter. On my 'table, the benefits are deeper and tighter bass, as well as increased clarity and definition throughout the frequency range.

With all of the excitement surrounding vinyl at the moment does no one else have thoughts or suggestions?

I used a clamp like the KAB USA one years ago with a Rega P2. Worked pretty well actually. I peronally think the graphite mats or the Funk Firm hard mats work better than sorbathane, which can suck detail. A bit pricey though.

The Clever clamp looks pretty cheap to me and possibly annoying to use. What about the ClearAudio Quadro Record Clamp?

That damn thing cost more than the 'table is worth! I've added the middle Clear Audio clamp to my list of possibles.

Doh! Sorry- didn't realize that about the price. Then I'd just go with the KAB one. Like I said- it does the job and doesn't look too bad either.
