What work of music would you most like to see released as a multi-channel disc? Why?

With all of the new SACD and DVD-Audio surround-enabled hardware finally coming out, we have to wonder what you'll really want to do with all of those extra channels. What piece of music do you think is especially suited to five or six channels?

USE IT! Surround sound is a natural replacement for DSP which always sounds phony after about three repetitions. I can't think of a better or more natural way to record ambience.

pinkfloyd they rock and it would be very enjoyable to listen to their "stereo" tricks presented in five, six, or seven chanel souround format.

Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON.

I don't intend to get into surround, but one that would work is CARMINA BURANA by Carl Orff. Pretty wild in two, must be mind bending in multi. What do you think?

Surround sound is not for listening to music; rather, it is 5.1 channels of aural annoyance!

Surround would be okay, but you know the studios will need 10 years to figure out how to mix it right for audiophiles!

Have you ever been to a live performance and sat right in the middle of the performers? I've never seen seats like those for sale. I think these companies aren't doing their research/market analysis. They are getting greedy, thinking the mass public will upgrade their systems every two years to add more channels and accommodate new formats. Get real.

Pink Floyd - THE WALL, maybe? Actually Stereo is fine. Let's leave surround sound for our home theater, oh yeah! Like Pink Floyd's THE WALL.

If the glorious overuse of surround information in many new movies is an indication, I think few mainstream recording engineers are going to favor restraint in the surround channels. For certain types of classical or jazz music I can see a positive effect of having separation among the 3 fronts but rarely using surrounds. Electronic or pop music will surely take many years to effectively mix into surround formats. Who wants a hi-hat ringing in the rear speaker or back-ups coming from behind?

Everything by Pink Floyd.

Without a doubt, Dark Side of the Moon - simply because the SQ mix I have on record is far better than the stereo mix I have on CD - the stereo version of the plane crashing is nothing compared to the SQ!

Anton Bruckner's Te Deum. It needs all channels available in a system and in a soul.

Its hard enough to find well produced stereo recordings. Just imagine how many more ways the music can be screwed up when distributed over 6 channels.

I would love to see pretty much any Pink Floyd albums remixed by the band for surround. I also would love to see Led Zeppelin's music remixed by Jimmy Page. Surround sound it could really open us some of their more busy songs. Hopefully surround sound will be used in a realistic manner and not as this week's gimmick. Unfortionatly I think that surround sound remixed recordings will initially be very gimmicky, much like early stereo recordings with everything being hard left/right.

Right now, surround screws up the spatial and tonal balances required for accurate recordings. The engineers will never agree on a standard so I am afraid we will NEVER have accurate surround sound.

I can't wait to hear a true multi-channel recording of Mahler's 2nd and 8th Symphonies in a GREAT concert hall with authentic room acoustics being captured and reproduced!!

two ears? one source? 6 channels? Why not settle for ambient sound? It's the real thing, isn't it?

Read the journals. It is so difficult to get two channels sounding right, I completely fail to see the need to quadruple the task. It's movie-stuff, not music.

I love when performers ranging from Elton John to Metalica put together compilations that include an orchestra. So I would like something along those lines.

Where do the speakers go? Most rooms just can't accomodate 5 of them with speaker cord running all over the place and up the walls, a sub on the floor and a stack of equipment. And good speakers are expensive. I just can't see it.

We listen through a pair of ears. Why on earth must people listen to recorded music through more than a pair of speakers?
