Bob on Bob

The brouhaha over Bob Dylan's recent Rolling Stone interview surprised me. Dylan cryptic, caustic, and cranky? What a shock. Has he ever held a straightforward interview where he kept on topic? Louis Menand reviews Bob Dylan: The Essential Interviews.

I've always thought people tried to read too much into Dylan. Of course, given the altered state of mind that most people were in when they listened to Dylan, I can somewhat understand. Everybody was looking for meaning. Me, I was looking for the meaning in the snow on the television.

More than cranky, his interviews usually offer a good read. Very little rock star BS; always happy to hear an icon piss & moan, especially about the business. (Of course, he's right about the sound of modern music.)
