We've known that oil dependence was a bad thing for 50 years, so how come I can't go out and buy an electric car as easily as an 8mpg Hummer?

Stop laughing. You mean the market doesn't really dictate the products available?

Sure, there's a market for plug-in electric cars, just like there's a market for $67,000 tube amplifiers.
