Autism Unveiled

Anthropologist Roy Richard Grinker argues that the autism "epidemic"of autism is actually the result of doctors broadening the diagnosis to include more people—and society becoming more willing to see autism and other mental disorders.

To confirm his theory, he did research in India, South Africa, and South Korea to discover how the autistic are treated in other cultures.

This new awareness of the many disorders in the autism spectrum is such a positive development! Such a diagnosis can help a confused family understand where they are, and what their next step might be. A child's anxiety about "being different" can be greatly eased, and then strategies to cope with difficult, confusing social situations can be devised. And properly done, the school's special-education plan can combine the efforts of both teachers and health professionals, not to limit the child, but to set the stage for his success.
