Oppo BDP-83 Bluray disc player

About two months ago I finally got around to upgrading my home theater system to high definition. I purchased an LG 47" lcd HDTV along with an Oppo BDP-83 Bluray disc player and added a high definition DVR cable receiver. All in all a very worthwhile and long overdue upgrade. While having an HDTV and plenty of high definition channels to watch is great it is really the Oppo BDP-83 that is the star of the whole system.

By the way the remainder of the system consists of a 5.1 channel Marantz AV receiver, a Totem center channel speaker, Energy Veritas 2.1 left & right channel speakers (on dedicated stands), a Linn Activ subwoofer and Wharfedale Diamond rear channel speakers. Here's a link to a photo of the system:

Back to the Oppo, this unit is amazing!! First of all the picture quality is superb, both on Bluray discs, as one would expect, but also on DVDs, which often look almost as good as Bluray discs. In addition, the unit also plays many different video file formats such as mpg, mov, avi and mkv files. And it plays these files either from CDs, DVDs (both burned as simple data discs) or from a USB flash drive. These also look great especially high resolution mkv files.

The player also supports and decodes all the latest bluray audio formats along with multi-channel DVD-Audio and SACD. I have the multi-channel analog outputs of the Oppo going into the multi-channel analog inputs of the Marantz receiver since the Marantz is several years old and does not decode any of the latest bluray audio formats. The audio quality is as a superb as the video quality.

Other outstanding features:

The player comes with an HDMI cable (plus additional HDMI cables can be purchased directly from Oppo at a very, very reasonable price) and a Bluray setup and calibration disc.

Oppo offers firmware updates on its web site which are easy to download and install.

At $500 the Oppo is not the least expensive bluray player on the market but it is easily the best one available for anywhere near that price. If you own a large screen HDTV but have not made the leap up to bluray there is no longer any reason to wait, the Oppo BDP-83 is a great bluray player and will make a fine centerpiece to any home theater system.

Re: Oppo BDP-83 Bluray disc player

It is possible to love many formats of sound and music. Great audio is essential for engrossing home cinema. I certainly enjoy my Marantz/ Wharfedale Opus/Evo set-up. I gave a good friend a pair of Diamonds for surround in his nice Sony/Onkyo/Paradigm Blu-Ray system. We enjoy sharing notes on SACD and DVD-A also. Have fun with your new upgrade!

Thanks rvance,

Yesterday afternoon the final piece of the home theater upgrade arrived: a new leather sofa with two built-in motorized reclining seats. Now I'm all set for the start of football season and the baseball playoffs.
