I am going to ask you a foolish question...what are you connected to. Most modern mass market receivers or AV control centers do not have a phono preamp built in. If you have it plugged into a line in, you might get no sound or worse.
Sorry, I should have mentioned I have a NAD PP2 plugged into a Mod Squad Deleuxe Line Drive. It's in Aux2 input. Thanks for the reply. Matt
Do you have the cartridge pins correctly connected to the tonearm clips? Do you have the turntable plugged into the PP 2's input and not its output?

Yes, I went back and checked all the connections from the cartridge to the PP2 to the preamp. I was reading abot some old cartridges having the colors wrong but I can't see that happening. Maybe I shouldn't take anything for granted. Thanks, Matt
What do you know about the cartridge? It is possible with an old cartridge that the internal wires have been broken. This can happen, for example, if someone had tried to measure the DC resistance of the cartridge with an ohmmeter.
It is also possible for the internal wires of the tonearm to have fractured.

Yessir. That's where I'm heading with this. I tried it again, and I'm hearing the faintest of sound coming from the speakers. I purchased this NOS ADC cartridge but I'm definately going to get a new one. If the new one does the same thing, I probably should rewire the tonearm. Thanks again, John
Maybe you have a dead outlet and the power supply isn't getting juice. If the record is tracking and all the cables are properly placed, it would seem to be either a power supply problem or a dead input at the receiver or deteriorated wiring as mentioned by JA.
I'd try swapping inputs at the receiver and see if that did anything.
Thanks for the reply. I did try another preamp. This one is a PS Audio 6.0. Nothing from this one as well. I'll try swapping out the cartridge next. Hopefully that's the problem. If not, anyone want a Walker CJ55?
Well, after all that, it turns out it WAS the cartridge! I replaced with a brand new Shure M97xE and am happily enjoying my record collection all over again! I feel like a little kid. Thanks to all who responded to this post. Rock On!
nice resolution!!
have fun!!!
Mikey is smiling and celebrating a new convert. He prolly breaks a CD every time a thread like this appears.
