Do you adjust your balance control at all?

Last week we picked on tone controls, so this week, we'll put the spotlight on the balance knob. Do you use it in your system? Is it at any setting other than dead center?

There's just no need and I listen to a number of different types of music too.

There is no balance control on my Conrad-Johnson preamp. I never used it when I had it on other amps, anyway.

I never used this feature, and would like manufacturers take this off their future products so that we can enjoy purer sound and save money.

Very slightly

NEVER. PERIOD. I TAKE PRIDE IN KNOWING THAT MY SYSTEM IS DEAD-ON THE CENTER SWEET SPOT ALL OF THE TIME BECAUSE MY EARS TELL ME SO.

Speaker spectrum sometimes effects perception of mix and center locations.

I have used it to deal with room acoustics,

Don't have one on my Creek 4330SE. Don't need it. For you folks who claim you do need this redundant gizmo, get busy with a chainsaw and fit the room to your speakers! Simple and clean (well, after you sweep up and vaccum).

O yeah, a lot of things lean to one side. Like when I walk down the street, I have to watch out for little unevenesses or posts. In fact, my whole body leans acording to the phase of the moon. You think it's hard to match equipment try getting through a door when you are cocked at a funny angle, or try to get furniture that will conform to the tilt of my lilt. I actually had to buy crooked speakers to hear straight. Those bastards at v8 would have you think that all you need is one can of that foul stuff to straighten out—oh no, I drank two gallons in one sitting and all it got me was bloated. You don't know what its like to have scientists poke and prod you at every turn and tell you that you defy reason, among other things. Sure laugh now, but one day you may have a balance problem then we will see who is laughing!

I don't have one, and wouldn't use it if I did. Balance controls, that is.

I just can't get myself to care enough to fiddle with the balance. I'd rather listen to music and make the necessary left/right adjustment in my head.

My pre-amp doesn't have a balance-control and I don't miss it.

Maybe it's just me, but I will tend to move listening position to match perceived balance rather than fiddle with the control.

You mean there is such a control??!!

rarely necessary

Adjusting the balance on most recordings would throw the intended mix off, unless you're making up for speaker placement in a less than ideal room or something.

Mike Collette's picture

I use it to balance speaker position and other adjustments. During play, it is set dead center.

John's picture

It's usually not necessary.

My system doesn't have a balance control (Musical Fidelity A300).

Dave Sheehan's picture

Why's it even on the unit?

Rich M's picture

It is always set at dead center.

My amplifier does not have balance control, and I never had a desire to have it. I think in most cases it works just fine without it.

Bob Hudgins's picture

If you do use it you would be off kilter! That would tell me that you are compensating for a problem in one of your speakers.

Steve in Az's picture

Never had a situation that required adjustment of the balance.

Probably less than .1% of the time, or you could go crazy adjusting every record and CD.

I use it to swing music when sitting too far to the right or left. Even better, though is using the "mono" control on some of my old gear. That way I really do hear everything, no matter where my seat.

My ribbon speakers are quite sensitive to their surroundings. Small balance control adjustments counteract my room's not being totally symmetrical.

David Zuckerman's picture

This probably means there's something wrong with my room or system

Dennis's picture

No need to use it. I have a Behriger EQ.
