I have owned Carver gear and seem to recall it has a lot of power...is the CM1090 different. I would recomend you try the new speakers with what you have for a while to see what you need (ie; does the sound lack anything in your system)
to biamp the Kappas. Otherwise there are used Emotiva XPA-2 power amps in excellent condition around for $650.

I will definitely try out the 1090 when i get it back. Someone mentioned to me the soundcraftsmen line but I know nothing about them tho i like the retro look.
and those Kappas will really sing with at least twice that. Don't be afraid to feed them adequately, the rewards will become apparent. An Adcom GFP-750 would be much better for a two-channel system preamp.

Good heavens! what are you trying to do, deafen yourself....150 watts is a LOT of power and will make painfully loud music.
has a interesting impedance curve, dipping below 2 Ohms a few times across its frequency response. So, one, you should have a rather robust amplifier which can accommodate those dips and two, an amplifier with plenty of reserve afforded by a huge transformer and adequate filter capacitance. So, we are not seeking painfully loud volumes, but a good match to provide the current the speakers may call for during enjoyable listening levels.
Yes jackfish I have heard the kappas are tough to drive. I have been looking at the adcom 555 or a carver tfm-35. I also looked at a carver tfm-4.0 in nice condition. all for around 3-400$. I know I can get around 3-350 for my cm-1090 so i am planning on selling it and replacing it with a high current amplifier and a nice preamp. I am looking at an adcom gtp555, hafler 110, rotel rc-971, NAD 1155, or carver c-2 preamps. ah yes... choices choices. Any input you folks have would be appreciated :)
GFA-555 will have more difficulty with the Kappas than the Carvers which have a 2 Ohm rating. For preamps you must mean the Adcom GFP-555 which is a fair unit, but the GFP-750 is out of your price range I guess. The Rotel RC-1070 can be found for around $300 used and is a very nice unit.
Those Kappa's will eat 150 Watts as an appetizer.
