I really like the Sony 7506 as a closed back headphone. Not perfect, but what is at $100. The Sennheiser HD280 usually get high marks as well.

There is an in ear model the Denon CK452?, I beleive, that is given high marks at www.headphone.com . They gave it 4 1/2 bars, a very good rating. $59.00
They also gave a good rating to a new Shure over the ear style, but I have not heard it.

I know that JA uses the Sony's 7506 from time to time as does Steely Dan engineer, Roger Nichols.

I will always have one pair of these around. You can go to a local Guitar Center and audition if need me.

My kid is looking for headphones (on the ear, not circumaural or in-the-ear or ear-buds). Sennheisers would be my first choice but I don't see too many places carrying it around here, or headphones in general, for auditioning.

Don't forget the Grado line:

They're always getting great reviews. And Music Direct (and Audio Advisor, and others) has a thirty-day return policy, so if you don't like them you can return them and you're only out the shipping. I have the iGrado, and it's much better than earbuds.

I really like the Grado headphones myself. Hand made in the United States, efficient (so they don't kill the battery in portable prices), and fairly priced. Take a listen to the SR80's.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Sorry for the late response - too busy at work/home to look at the forum.

We are very satisfied with the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. They sound great, very neutral, and they are sensitive enough that a computer sound card drives them very easily.
