If you are looking to replace your CD player, need a good DVD player, and are on a budget consider the Oppo DV-980H for $170. Definitely an overachiever.
I agree with jackfish, you'll get the most bang per buck by focusing on replacing those speakers. I don't really know the speakers in your price range, but the names mentioned by jackfish look good to me.
