I've looked at that graph and figured something out. After 2006, the industry can announce that it has done us all another favor and has eliminated all that unused headroom space on their media. They can honestly state that every disc will make full use of its entire dynamic range at all times.

Merchandise is only as wonderful as we think it is. Truth, Beauty and High Art are nice, but, if every note is as loud as possible, it makes sense it is as good as it can be, well, to some merchandisers.
