Yeasayer?

I've been pondering the two Yeasayer albums and I like them, but that isn't a guarantee you will.

They have so many inflections that flash me onto other bands that I can't decide if it's derivative or if they've plaigerized enough sources to be original.

They are good in that late night sort of spacey way. Not as soporific as Mazzy Star or Hope Sandoval's solo discs, but not quite as lively as XX, either.

There's lots of Joe Jackson (Night and Day era) licks hidden in there, some Pinkish Floyd, and so many familiar things happening at once that I can't put my finger on it all at any one moment.

(Parts of could almost be from a Ronnie Lane album.)

So, I give them a provisional thumbs up and would add: This is the kind of music that grows on your after the first four or five plays.

OK, more like Adam Ant, Yaz(oo), and The Cure all got together at Erasure's house.

Lots of Phil Manzanera, too.

A little Folk Implosion.

I prefer "Odd Blood" to "All Hour Cymbals."

Well, I like everything you've referenced. I haven't listened to Yeasayer yet, or the XX. Sometimes lots of hype turns me away from bands, which, I think, is the case for me and Yeasayer.

(Maybe this is because I like to think that I discovered something on my own. In fact, however, it's rare that I actually do discover anything entirely on my own.)

Crap. Yeasayer is acclaimed?

I agree with you - I want to find things on my own.

Now I have a dilemma!

I do wine the same way, it's hard to abide a hobby full of people running around shopping based on ratings and sometimes buying the wine I wanted!

We call them point whores. Unable to taste of their own volition, they are mindless zombies who shop as they are told.

Funny thing is, they will snap out of their haze briefly to get mad at you for calling them that.

Stephen, if hype can turn you away....how do you reconcile that with your audio gear acquisitions? (Not being my usual self, actually wondering what your philosophical overlap is in this regard.)

While I am sometimes turned off by media hype, I do have a few friends whose music recommendations I almost always take; these happen to be the same people who influence my hi-fi interests.

Yup, media hype does strange things to hobbies that are so full of people who claim to make up their own minds.

Now I'm worried.

Re: Yeasayer?

yeah, Kanye even has a yeasayer video on his blog.

one of the band members was a rap producer before starting yeasayer..and their stated goal for this last album was to "compete in the danceclubs with Rihanna"-- no sarcasm.

Re: Yeasayer?

Track one has the piano from NIN's "Animal," methinks.

The Erasure feel stands out even more pover time.
