Dmitri Shostakovich. I don't believe anyone can respond intelligently on the "Greatest Composers of the 20th Century" unless he or she is familiar with Shostakovich's music. Start with Symphony 5 or String Quartet 8.

For me, it's a toss-up between Randy Newman (not just his pop albums, but his film scores), Brian Wilson, and Tom Waits.

Sergei Rachmaninoff. His Piano Concerto 2 is captivating, and his Symphony 2 is underappreciated and should rank with the best symphonies of the modern era.
