At what price would you seriously consider buying an SACD player? Why?

Sony announced last week that they are lowering the price of their latest SACD player to $3500. Is this the right price to get your attention?

not much softwear will be available

$2k is my limit for an SACD player. No need to spend more than that—with the rapidly advancing technology, tomorrow's $1k SACD player will outperform today's $3.5k player.

I already own a relatively esoteric cd player in the Krell DSP Based Integrated CD Player and making an investment on sacd with all its attributes it's prematurely! Eventually the price will drop to accesible numbers and if you buy now you'll feel guilty! And I need to know for sure that it's an audible and remarkable sonic experience!!!

I won't be an "early adopter" on this one. Get the price down to a realistic level and give me the option to listen to two-channel, 'cause multichannel doesn't do it for me.

NEW TECHNOLOGY STILL UNDECIDED, IS IT FUTURE PROOF? WHO KNOWS HOW FAR THIS TECHNOLOGY IS GOING TO GO.

It should be at a price that most of readers would spend for any front end.

Remember when CD players cost several thousand dollars? Now you can get them free when you buy a cellular phone. I gave one away last week. I have a modest system composed of Martin-Logan CLSs, an NAD CD player, and a B&K power amp. I don't have the extra several thousand dollars to throw around on a suped-up record player. To me, it's silly. I have better things to do with $3500.00.

Some of us audiophiles are raising family's at the same time

In order for this format to make it quickly, the SACD software must be marketed at the same price as the 16-bit CD; and the players should be affordable, not sold at outrageous prices.

Unless it cost more than $1000, I would not consider an SACD player—at least not till I knew SACD was at least equal to or superior to my LP front-end.

Based on the history of CD hardware, paying more than $500 for a first-generation SACD player seems foolish to me.

Intrigued, but still cautious . . .

for $3500 i'd expect a larger library of software (titles).

If they come out with enough software, then I would be willing to spend up to $1499. However, I am far too committed to vinyl to worry about SACD right now.

$3000 dollar range is about right if the format is successful

I've gone through too many "upgrades" in the last 4 years. First the upgraded laserdisc player with an RF output, then the upgraded pre/pro to play Dolby, then the upgrade to DTS, then the DVD player. Fortunately, I waited a year to get a DVD player that would play DTS. But I'm sick of upgrades. How about something decent to play on what we've got? The list of DTS DVDs that are actually worth having is very short. And don't even get me started on HDTV! I'm off the upgrade path for a couple of years, at least until things settle down.

Are we talking high-end, or consumer grade? $1999 for high-end. I suspect, however, from what I have read, SACD isn't that superior and my guess is that it won't ever really catch on. Perhaps DVD-Audio will catch on, however... if they stop using compression for audio and come out with reasonably priced recorders. Only then will it take the major market share from normal CDs of today.

Sony has thar heads up there asss on this one!

If Sony and the followers of SACD don't lower their prices for players within the first year, they're doomed!

My Maximum for this money-grabbing format is a NICKEL!!

Not for a two-channel player. And I will never buy a DVD-Audio player or SACD player with six analog outputs. I'll wait and sit on my CD collection.

i mean if its gonna b the future why would they want to position it like when cd was a new format

Tom Dedrick's picture

I would purchase one today if compatible CDs were plentiful. But with a limited selection of software and an unknown future, I would pay only a few hundred dollars right now, just for the sake of experimentation.

Khorn's picture

I have never seen one, let alone heard one yet, so why on earth would I even consider buying one?

Great music has no price, great gear has too much price. $1499 is a lot to me!

Rob Damm's picture

I'm really going to need some convincing that SACD is going to sound all that much better than Hi-end digital as it exists now. Also, I have some serious questions about software support.

Jim's picture

Until the SACD is defined as the standard with software to back this format, the SACD player is not very tempting. Also seeing that these are just first generation SACD transports, I would not spend a lot of money purchasing these players. For many high end audiophiles, they should wait and see if SACD servives the market.

I chose the lowest price, but in reality there is NO price at which I would buy this blatant attempt at securing rights from Sony. Did Sony learn nothing from Beta/VHS? Mac/PC?

Tom Warren's picture

I'm waiting. With computer and digital technologies evolving so rapidly how do we know this will catch on and be a lasting formatt. And I forget, will the SACD player play my CDs with high quality?
