Your post could use a little proofreading, but I THINK what you're asking is: "What format do members see themselves as investing in for the future. And is sound quality more important than availability?" Yes?
For me, I still think vinyl sounds the best, and it's relatively easy to obtain either used or in audiophile pressings online. Plus, I have over 900 already so I'm sticking with that for the most part. With my wife, we have about 450 Redbook CDs so that's pretty much our digital format for the foreseeable future.
SACD and DVD-A, while sonically superior to CDs are formats that never got full support from the labels and are limited as to where you could play them, so I don't see getting into those at any time myself.
There was a Stereophile online poll about this topic not too long ago. You may want to look that up...
Hi, guys!
I'm a vinyl lover, but I'm starting to feel taken advantage of.
I've watched record prices reach record levels, to the point that some new issues are coming out at 40 and 50 bucks a pop! Plus, they keep re-issuing the same "classics" and talking about "new mastering" to the point that I feel like I'm being barked at on a carnival midway.
No offense to anyone, but how many damn versions of "Kind of Blue" do we need?
It kind of feels like that TV commercial where everything they serve at a restaurant is a form of Cheerios.
Sorry for that rant. Getting back to the question...
I will continue to love vinyl, but an almost equally important answer for me is that I will continue to strive to own "hard copies" of the music I buy; be it vinyl, CD, SACD, or "other." I'm thinking it will start to become less and less common for people to "own" music. In the future, we will "rent" it.
I still like the physicality of owning my music - so my truest answer would be that I plan on buying "music hardware" for as along as I can.
Cheers!
Today, I have paired up the Linn LP12 Valhalla with SME V and Troika with a Roksan Caspian CD Player. (used to have Meridian 206 and have tried a load of other CD players up to the
Ewwww.
They assured me it was "virgin" vinyl!
Although, I now wonder if they'll sell..."used by Scarlet Johansson" pressings of Serg Gainsbourg records.

On the down side, what are your LP's doing that gets them banished?
I find the juxtaposition of these statements interesting. If one of your objections to SACD/DVD-A is the limitation on where you can play them, surely that applies even more so to vinyl. I can play hybrid SACDs in my car but the LPs won't fit in the slot.
Kal
LMAO
General wear and tear on the vinyl. I havent stored some of them particularly well. Some hail back to the days of my Ariston when the rock was glued to the end of an extremely long cantilever belomging to a Goldring 900IGC... I seem to remember having a Grado F1+ too, scribbling around in my grooves.
Yeah and I hope they dont try this again.
You mean to say that I'm the only guy who had one of these?
That's my uncle Larry in the car. It was a '56 Dodge.
There was a girl I knew when I was 15 whose dad had a vintage convertible with a fold down record player in the middle of the back seat. The player would fold down like one of those center armrests, but it had a full sized record player in it.
Ah, those were the days...sitting and listening to China Grove with Nancy in the back seat of the car with no top.
It was Idyllic.
Edit: These images were taken from Roadkill on the Web. If anyone would like to learn more about the record players, feel free to visit the site.
Thanks, Buddha! Fun stuff.
Whoa, d
I actually don't listen to much music in the car, not do I spend much time in a car at all, as I work from home and live in a city I can walk all around in. My main beef with SACD etc. is that so little of what is new actually comes out on it. On the other hand, [practically everything I like comes out on vinyl within 6 months or less of a CD release. Often it's simultaneous. In the end it's still the fact that I have a huge investment in LPs and CDs and don't really need to add another format right now. That I'm firmly two channel, which I know ain't your thing anymore.
My comment was mostly in jest as I rarely ever listen to discs of any sort in the car.
That's exactly the reverse with me. There hasn't been any significant LP release in my areas of interest in decades. OTOH, I get a half dozen new and interesting SACDs a week, even today.
Buddha,
I appreciate the double entendre...howerer, you forgot to describe how she handled your tonearm!
I have a friend who used a pair of Marantz box speakers sitting on the back seat of his BMW 2002. They were held in place with the seatbelts and actually sounded pretty good.
If I had to choose between those types, I would have to say It really doesn't matter to me. I mean I would definitely go with the latest format, but something is great about spinning an old vinyl record.
Damn, I sure must be behind the times. I just finished installing a valve AM radio in my '52 Jag.
What's an 8-track?
Let's just say that she made me wonder whether or not my tonearm had a detachable wand!
Your friend proves that "great minds.." thing.
I used to have a Fiat 124 that I put smaller Advents in the back little "seat" area. The first day I had 'em in I went for a drive and almost drove right off the road when Neil Young started singing at me from up in the tree canopy!
That reminds me, I still have those babies somewhere!
