Avoid loud noises. For example, rock concerts. I guess it can't hurt to keep a pair of earplugs handy, just in case ...

I have a quiet car and pickup, but I never drive at hwy speed with open windows. When mowing grass or snow-blowing, I wear ear plugs. I have given up stock car racing-even though I wore earplugs there, too. Also, I have stopped taking aspirin except if absolutely necessary. Aspirin has been shown to affect tinitus which I have a slight amount of now.

I am a professional driver and have been using earplugs since my regular hearing test have shown a loss in hearing higher frequencies. I also use the plugs when using power tools.
