Santa brought me a Nitty Gritty Basic record cleaning machine, and LedZep I & II from Classic Records.
Did you get any new gear or music for the holidays?
Actually, the audiophile treats that I got are more accurately called treatments. I have a friend who designs, borrows, and creates room treatments. He is an excellent do-it-your-selfer who makes treatments that are as good, if not better than what you could buy in a high end audio store. This year for Christmas he gave me a set of extremely solid custom made speaker stands. By custom made, I mean that he measured my ear height in my listening chair and designed the stands to place tweeters at the optimum height for listening enjoyment. That was an exceptional Christmas gift. He also made a stand for my CD player that is also extremely solid. You could drive a semi through my listening room without the CD player vibrating in the least. An incredible and unexpected by-product of these gifts, was playing around with speaker placement to be sure of the "sweet spot" before securing the speaker stands into the cement beneath the carpet. I found that I was almost a foot off in my original placement. I am now hearing all of my CDs for the first time again. Christmas was very merry in my audio world.
I got a stocking full of new SACDs, and I couldn't be happier. Oh, and an elf informed me that anyone who actually wants to see Sony fall flat on its face with this amazing new format would be added to Santa's "naughty" list next year. Apparently, such individuals have digitally watermarked souls . . .
I got several new CDs with HDCD encoding. I find it very satisfying that I can enjoy such a great format NOW while everyone just ignores this incredible technology. By the way, I have not yet heard DVD-A but I have heard SACD, and I think it sounds no better than HDCD.
I got an MSB Link III with P1000 Power supply and 96khz Chip. DVD-A and SACD? Who cares, once you've heard this product in action? $900.00 delivered, and it will carry you through the next 4 years - maybe more, once MSB releases their 192khz chip.
Well, all I really got in the "audiophile" department was a gift certificate to my local dealer . . . but I did get the pair of Birkenstock's I've wanted for over two years now. Maybe I could have gotten them sooner if audio wasn't so damn expensive. But I guess you cant wear loudspeakers on your feet.
People shouldn't order for you in restaurants, buy your clothes, comb your hair, and they certainly shouldn't buy music for you, based on their tastes. The Eagles boxed set is waste -- you can tune in any radio station and hear enough Eagles for any lifetime.
Santa brought me just what I wanted, and then some. I got my new FlatCap 2. For low-end Naimies like me, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread -- or at least the Nait 5. And I got a boatload of great CDs to play through my improved rig. Haydn's complete piano sonatas! Three discs of Annie Fischer playing Beethoven's piano sonatas! Whew. A happy holiday season indeed.
