VPI Traveler

For me, the biggest, most exciting, and most inspiring news of the show came in the form of VPI's latest and least expensive turntable, the Traveler ($1299). The turntable is a tribute to Sheila Weisfeld, who passed away in December of last year.

After his mother passed away, 27-year-old Mathew Weisfeld decided he would assume an active role with the company. "We wanted to do this for mom," he said, and explained that she was an avid traveler. "I'm very excited to be working in this industry, and especially excited to be working with my dad."

The Traveler, which takes ideas from VPI's popular Scout and Classic models, marks the first time Mathew's helped his father, Harry, with a design. It has an aluminum platter and plinth, a new 10" tonearm, and will be available in a variety of colors (at no extra cost). The 'table weighs a hefty 24-lbs, and should be a cinch to setup, said Mathew. "All you'll need to do is install the platter."

Mathew hopes to help VPI reach a wider, younger audience. To that end, he's given the company a presence on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn. In addition to building a community, VPI will use the platforms to hold contests and offer giveaways. In fact, on June 1st, VPI will select one winner to receive a free Traveler turntable. All you have to do to enter is become a friend on Facebook.

I haven't seen many reviews, but several of the vendors are really pumped about the Traveler.  The "expert" at the vendor I ordered it from says its trumps the Scout at half the price.  I received similar comments from every vendor I inquired.

So, decided to jump in and ordered a blue one.  Hope it stands up to the expectations.
