Sweet Jebus, I can't remember the last time I heard an album I liked this much. The reference points are obvious: Motown, Philly soul, a bit o' Beach Boys. It's freaking frothy but it isn't leaving my cd player. There is nothing ironic here, nothing post modern. And every time you think he's going to fall into cliche land, he pulls out of the nose dive with some great musical or lyrical trick.
Touchstone: I guarantee you'll love this if you like Laura Nyro's 'Gonna Take a Miracle.' (Or early Todd Rundgren)
