For a new table I'd look at the Rega P1 Improved by LP Gear for $400. Add a Rega glass platter for $85.
How old is the stylus/cartridge?
That old direct drive Panasonic should be decent if it is in nice shape - mid 1970s I am guessing. Could likely use a little oil for the bearing area.
Those old DDs sound pretty good with a good budget cartridge like Sumiko Pearl (make sure it is aligned correctly - any dealer should be able to do this for you).
If you want a better/newer table, look for a Technics 1200. KAB USA sells new ones from $475 and up. Way better than a Rega P1 or Project Debut 3 (I own all 3).
If you do get a P1 that glass platter is a great idea - I will be getting one from mine next time I am south of the border. Our Rega guys here in the Great White North don't carry them.
I might also suggest that you consider spending a little more for a used US built table from VPI or SOTA. These are far more robust and better sounding than the low end Rega or Pro-ject stuff.
