CES 2016

Thiel's new Intellisub was the highest-tech new subwoofer I encountered at CES 2016. It uses wireless control with convenient SmartSub app, which allows the user to control its digitally-processed, Auto-Room correction software. Rory Buszka, Thiel's engineer, explained that the built-in SmartSubXT system automatically adjusts its output based on measurements from 1–40 locations in the room.

The new Thiel sub is a 90 lb, sealed system, housed in a medium-sized curved enclosure finished in rosewood, espresso walnut, high-gloss black, or high-gloss white. It employs a 12" aluminum-coned long-throw (40mm peak) driver that by itself weighs 30 lbs, and uses a 3", 4-layer, copper-coated aluminum voice-coil. The woofer is driven by an internal class-D 1200W (2500W peak) amplifier. It features a graphic OLED display just above the driver opening.

The product is said to meet the criteria for the CEA's 2010 subwoofer standards. It is being priced under $5000. At the end of the presentation, Rory played several pipe organ recordings, including one of my favorites, the "Pie Jesu " selection from Rutter's Requiem. The sub blended well with the Thiel floorstanding full-range speakers, resulting in solid deep bass pedal notes set into a wide soundstage.
