I'm a huge Tallis Scholars fan, too! Their Iberian Requiem discs have been on incessant repeat for the past year and a half. Being a Columbia student, I get a break on the tix at Miller Theater - $7!

I wish I had known that sooner. I already bought my ticket.

American Bach Soloists just performed Victoria's Requiem in the Bay Area. To read my review, please see
http://www.sfcv.org/2008/03/04/aiming-for-the-stars/.

BTW, I often review a concert a week for SFCV, which is quite a wonderful publication. http://www.sfcv.org. I also review for American Record Guide and Opera News online.

Classical music lovers: check the front page of this website later today for my obit of Giuseppe di Stefano.

Just came back from the concert... It was magical. Delicate, floating vocals hover and gently decay as the next note gets picked up by a soprano and handed off to the alto. A truly moving experience. I loved every second of it.

Excellent, Alex! I wish I could have gone, but had a chunk of my thesis due. What a bother...

If you don't know what to write by now, you're not going to know it. So, you may as well have gone to the concert.

Hi Alex:

Sorry I missed you there. I was sitting up front (about eight rows back) and from where I was sitting, the room acoustic seemed a bit too vast, compared to other NYC churches I have heard the Scholars perform in. Smoky Mary's on 46th is just about perfect and St. Thomas on Fifth in the 50s are both better suited to their blend.

That said, they were, as usual, phenomenal. Alto Patrick Craig has one of the purest and most powerful instruments I've ever heard -- at least this side of a Vox Humana organ stop. In the six-part Victoria Mass, I thought sopranos Amy Moore and Amanda Morrison achieved a unison that was mind-bogglingly tight -- very close to hearing perfection.

When it comes to programming, Sir Peter is a master -- and the mix of Spanish and Portuguese polyphony was one of his most compelling programs ever -- right up there with his all Isaac concerts in the '80s, IMO.

Hi Wes,

I agree with you about the space being a bit too vast. Whereas it would have been nicer to hear them in a more intimate environment, the acoustics were good enough where I could lose myself in the performance.

You're right on the money with your assessment of the performance. I was amazed as to how seamless they handled the handoffs to the point where you weren't sure who was singing or where the voices were coming from. Aside from the technical aspect of the performance, the performance was very emotionally moving.

I'm sorry I missed you there. I'm surprised you weren't spotted by the celebrity watch. You know, Michael Lavorgna was spotted like a 747 on a military radar.
