The idea is that one can get HD audio without HDMI but one still needs something that can control multiple analog channels. The situation is analogous to the analog outputs of multichannel SACD players.
In general, it is better to use the HDMI and a competent pre/pro since the bass management, DSP, control and, perhaps, roomEQ are decided advantages. IMHO, using mch analog outs is a useful and effective stopgap.
If you have an effective way to control the multichannel analog outs, it will work fine.

Thanks for the clarifying answers! My current Onkyo suuround integtrated does have multiple analogue imputs and the ability to tune channel output. It's bass management is pretty basic and has been something I've had to tweak on my own anyway, so that's not a big issue. As I said, it'd be more of a stepping stone measure than anything else, and my next processor amp will for sure have all the right HDMI and room tuning features to work with HDMI v1.3 and the like.
