Welcome to the forum Rob...

I never met a Subwoofer that didn't need equalizing. That said I would be looking at the Velodyne Digital Drive (DD) series. Servo controlled and flexible user friendly Equalization program with calibration microphone included.

I would be looking at adequate front speakers before doing anything else. Get the basics right before you dress up the sow. If your speakers and sub aren't up to snuff, what about your amplifier and sources? Why start at the sub?

I wanted to start at the sub because Im a university student at an apartment right now so the only time I can listen to music or watch a movie is when I go to my parents house and they have decent speakers and receiver but the subwoofer is terrible. Therefore I wanted to get a subwoofer for their setup that I can use in the meantime until I move into a home of my owm. SO thats why I wanted a sub first.

The concensus is then that the JMLabs Cobalt SW800S is not competitive at the $850 USD level?

In a way I agree with Jan, the front loudspeakers are the top priority they must be all matched and able of reproducing down to the lowest frequency response as possible in a small package, some of the newer bookshelf types are now doing this and would be wise to look into this first.

Once you have assigned the matching fronts and none of this mismatching with these hooky looking centre channel loudspeakers, the left and right must be used with the same as in the central position otherwise timbre matching bass response will be uneven.

Now that you have got matching fronts, and if you notice the lowest octaves in the reproduction of the playback is lacking, then just a sub bass for sub bass extension, this will take the lows down lower and yet give reinforcement and creditability to the soundtrack.

You might what to add two of the same subs one dedicated for sub bass extension the other solely used for LFE.1 only. This way it will help from over taxing the sub bass with excessive sub bass and LFE.1 at the same time when something will give with a (slight popping sound) now that is bad!

I use the same approach in my home cinema and I can take it to the limits within the technical tolerances of each sub bass unit.
