Subwoofer and Accuphase

My dream has finally come true and I'm a proud owner of Accuphase E280 integrated amplifier. I know, many think I could do better for this money- but I always wanted this baby, and just exchanged my McIntosh MA5300 for it.

I'm a little perplexed and hoping someone can help me: how do I connect a subwoofer to this machine? It has RCA pre-outs, and "main in"... can't find any directions in the manual.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

If the pre-outs are connected

If the pre-outs are connected by jumpers to the main-ins (and there's no sound when they are removed)....
1 ...you can insert Y-connectors into the pre-outs and split each output to one main in and to one sub input. You will still need to deal with crossovers, level balance, etc. in some way.
2. ...you can feed the pre-outs to an external line-level crossover and the outputs of the crossover to the sub as well as back to the main-ins.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Path 1 has too many opportunities for a failure with my level of knowledge.

Path 2: the external line-level crossover: is it something akin to a mini-DSP? If so, will i be compromising some performance to gain the benefits of the subwoofer? Maybe I can do without a subwoofer? I have Focal Aria 936.

The mini-DSP is the easy and

The mini-DSP is the easy and obvious choice but it, just as any DSP, entails A/D and D/A of your main channels. If you are comfortable with that, go for it. Higher quality digital and analog crossovers can get pricey. The JLAudio CR-1 is out$tanding and Accuphase made a couple of them.

You should consider a subwoofer with a passive analog HP filter for your main speakers and decent EQ for the sub.

Looking up crossovers, and I'm starting to believe that my budget is reaching a point where I simply cannot pour much more into my setup at the moment.

Meanwhile, I just got an extremely generous offer on my Focal Arias, and considering swapping them for something that perhaps will provide me with enough bass to avoid the subwoofer altogether?

I would be extremely grateful if you could point me in the right direction... If such a solution even possible. I know Focals in this price range are light on bass. When I was shopping for speakers I auditioned Q Acoustics Concert 500, and felt that the bass was wonderful- but they were just a tad more than I budgeted for. Now I was willing to reconsider, but found that they are nearly impossible to find in Canada.

Depends on the options on your Subwoofer

Some active subs need a dedicated low level sub input.
But there are plenty of subs which just take pre out in stereo. They filter out the frequency they need and combine the signal into mono themselfs.
Some active subs even take high level loudspeaker output and bring the signal down to work for the sub.
So you would just connect the sub as speaker pair B.
