Stereophile Online Search and Grado RS1

Hi Everyone,

I'm submitting this thread to log the ongoing conversation and request to Mr. John Atkinson from members of Headfi.org through the Audioasylum, and to continue any follow up to the conversation here.

To summarize, some Headfiers (high-end headphone enthusiasts, members of www.head-fi.org) have been for a while puzzled by the fact that the Grado RS-1 headphones used to be among Stereophile's Recommended Component list, but at some point they got removed from the list. After another review in which the RS1 were compared to another Grado Headphone, the SR125, which made it into Class B of the list, the RS1 was found to have clear improvements over the SR125, yet it never made it back to the list.

I have lots of older Stereophile magazines but not with me right now (they are in a storage place in FL). So talking about the above mentioned RS1 situation with other Headfiers, I started using Stereophile's online Search functionality trying to find reviews of the Grado headphones. Specifically, I was looking up a statement I remember reading which said the RS1 were found too colored. But online I couldn't find pretty much any of the articles of interest to this topic. Hence my post in Audioasylum trying to contact Mr. John Atkinson, inquiring about the Search functionality.

Here's links to the related thread in Audioasylum, as well as in Head-fi.org:

Any progress and follow ups to this conversation will be added here. In fact, the Stereophile Forums should have been the best way to contact Mr. Atkinson in the first place I now realize.

Cheers,
Ra

As I said on the Asylum this morning, Mr. Saavedra, I need to plow though the magazine's archives to be able to answer your question. But I do remember that the top Grados were pretty contentious among my reviewing team.

Certainly, there's really no urgency at all, we are only hoping you'll have a chance to let us know if there is any extra info you could share with us about that ranking. Thanks for all your help and receptiveness. Looking forward to your feedback!
Cheers,
Raul
