Speakers too loud

I have a Sansui 3000A that has been totally refurbished by a qualified technician that works on vintage equipment. When I hook it up to my two Magnavox floor speakers, early 70's (1S8755) the sound is clear but way to loud on a very low volume setting about 5% from zero or volume off. When I picked the receiver up at the shop he had it hooked up to speakers and had the volume at about 50% and sounded great with plenty of room for adjustment. I am assuming the issue is not the receiver but the speakers. I purchased the speakers from a Goodwill store for $20. The volume knob will adjust the sound up and down but quickly becomes too loud when barely moving the knob. Thanks for all help
Frank

That's really strange. I have a Sansui AU-999, and most of their vintage amps have sensitive high gain, but not like that. And you witnessed it at 50%, so I agree, probably not the receiver. What's the rest of your setup consist of? Have you tried other sources - tuner, CD (aux), vinyl (phono) - testing the other inputs/outputs? Same thing? If so, it might just be a bad match between amp and speakers. Beautiful receiver btw :)

The sound level is the same

The sound level is the same weather it's from radio, phonograph, or earphones. Are there other speakers that would allow the lower/softer level or adjustments or does there need to be an adjustment on the volume pot which by the way has just been replaced while doing the refurb.

I found lots of ads and pictures, along with comments, but no technical information. Not promising, imho.

my guess is that the speakers

my guess is that the speakers were matched up with the very low end Magnavox receiver as a unit that wasn't designed for much output. When you hookup a higher end receiver like the Sansui 3000A to them the audio output is much greater than the speakers were designed for. Disappointing for speakers that are 35 lbs and are clearly floor units. This is just a guess as I am very much just an amature

speakers

Oh, those speakers came from a specific Magnavox system? Then I think you're right. That amp is not going to play nice with them. Any stickers on the back of the speakers? I bet they're 8 ohms (which is great, so is your amp) but If you see any sort of strange specs like "120v", like it should be plugged into a wall socket (i.e. a fully connected system) then I think that's your issue. Might be time to find a new pair.

I'm going to take the Sansui

I'm going to take the Sansui 3000A back to the shop tomorrow and try to match it up with some used speakers that will allow full volume control or at least better than 5%. I don't want to spend a ton on speakers but I'm pretty sure they will have something that my 3000A likes. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks

outcome

Bought a much better grade speaker set that works much better with the Sansui 3000A receiver. The shop owner told me that when people upgrade to quality receivers they must be matched with quality speakers or else you will end up with a mismatch that produces a sound product much lower than they are capable of. Apparently this is true. My first lesson learned in home audio. Thankyou to all for your help.
