The sound is great!, (with Tbone it is usually gonna be..see "Time the Revelator from Gillian Welch!)I give it that, but I loathe robert plant (and zeppelin) and just couldnt get past him enough to enjoy it.
Krauss is an all time favorite though.
I was a huge Zep fan when I was younger. A long time ago when I had hair as long as his, I looked quite a bit like him, right down to the physique, etc.
I have couple of her albums. She is very good. Also, worked a lot of on the soundtrack of, "O' Brother Where Art Thou" that won a Grammy for best album of the year knocking out U2 and Bob Dylan. I've been meaning to get her new album for some time now. Looks like I'm going to Acoustics Sounds after signing off here.
Robert's motto has always been, "ever onward" which has earned him my respect. After Zeppelin he could have easily cashed in on the success by sticking with what he knew, but he decided to take risks. Some of his solo albums have been better than others but none of them have sounded the same. When I first heard that they were working on this collaboration I gave it a 80/20 chance to be great because the idea sound JUST crazy enough to be something really special. Both Mr. Plant and Mr. Burnett have said they want to do a follow up and there is some tentative dates in place for that to happen.
Be sure to get the Melody Gardot album while you are at it....you won't regret it. Also a R2D4.
Now you're talking Gardot is a fabulous talent. I love her debut album.
OTOH, I'm at the opposite end about the Crouse/Plant LP. The LP mix emphasizes percussion too much, as if the mixing engineer just discovered percussion sounds and can't get enough. The voice generally are too low in the mix. The guitar solos a absolute, total cliche', with grinding amp sounds that any garage bander could dial up. With Ribot on the album I thought there'd be some good guitar, but it all sounded mailed in. I thought some of the drumming was sloppy, but I guess it's now in vogue to loosen the snares and try to sound drunk.
On the plus side, the lyrics are mostly very strong and some of the duet singing is very nice. I probably would have liked it a lot more if the mix hadn't been so heavy handed.
Dave
WHat do you mean"worked a lot of on the soundtrack of"
do you mean you worked on the album as in plaed on it or what?
Agreed.
i love allison, but could not really get into this album. for me, sometimes people with opposite type voices really click, other times not. i have to qualify this in that i only listened to the cd version. have not heard the LP version.
i felt the same way about the cd version of "in rainbows" until i got the LP of that for christmas. after a few listens, i really like it.
so maybe "sand" on LP would be the same for me.
Uh? You took that as meaning I worked on the soundtrack? No, she recorded several tunes on the soundtrack.
I'm surprised Acoustics Sounds doesn't carry her stuff. Which album do you recommend. She has one coming out in April as well.
Worrisome Heart
Thank you. I will get a copy based on your recommendation. I've listened to some samples and I like her sound.
If you ever get to see Allison Krauss live, do it. She and her band are true virtuosos. I've seen them twice and have been blown way. The MoFi live record set is top notch both musically and sonically.
Yeah, I'm waiting for a show near me one day. I do have a DVD of a concert she did with her band (Alison Krauss at Union Station). Very talented musicians.

Im trying to figure out why in Gods name she linked up with that has been. *ducks*
Always stirrin' the pot...
My musical tastes run classic rock to jazz and blues and classical. I listened to this album but it did nothing for me and I'm wondering if a lot of people like it because it is an excellent audio recording or because it is an excellent performance.
I don't find it to be an excellent recording, really.
I agree about Allison. She is certainly no Patricia Barber, Amanda McBroom, or Diana Krall!
First time I heard this recording, I set it aside, then played it here and there and it just start growing on me. It's one of those albums that takes a while to like, then it sticks.
Of course, YMMV!
Agreed, it's so low key and subdued it almost appeals more to the subconscious.
I wasn't going to comment, but since you asked;
Neither in my case. I first saw it reviewed in Stereophile, and I bought it because I liked what I had previously heard of Allison Krauss. I was disappointed with the sound in general, thinking it was a little too thick and heavy for my taste. The songs seemed mostly forgettable. I still liked a couple tracks featuring Allison, in particular "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson.
I've since seen the recording mentioned in several equipment reviews, why I don't truly understand. I started questioning why I didn't really care for it.
I really found it surprising when it received Grammy awards.
I guess it's just not my taste. But I usually like most anything..
Total Agreement. as for the Grammy Awards..we've discovered in recent years that an album need not be musically great to win. Just needs to sell a lot and look good.
I too, love Alison Krauss. Don't know what she was thinking, but she needs to stick with bluegrass!
Finally got around to listening to this vinyl. Very nice.
Please see this post over in the Rock Music section: Hi-Rez Sand
I'm not a big fan of James Taylor, but his duo w/ Allison is quite good.
They produced a unique sound worked their butts off on the road to promote it. It was a good pick for a Grammy. Hell, Linda Ronstadt (don't say a damn thing bad about her) received several Grammy awards for a variety of genres. She was awarded 10 Grammy Awards and nominated for 17. You can't achieve that by recording the same shit over and over again as a solo name.
