Hi Rich, You can purchase new & used vinyl at quite a few online companies. Here are a couple to start with. Amazon has a good exchange policy from what I understand. This is important because records can be warped when new.

Ebay has thousands of LP's available but you have to be really careful as to how the seller grades the records. I only buy from sellers who primarly sell vinyl and know how to properly grade them.
What are your listening prefernces?

Whatever you like! Chances are, you can find most of what you like for a reasonable price. For new pressings, check out soundstagedirect (everything, jazz, classical, rock, etc.), musicdirect (everything - classical, jazz, rock, etc.), acousticsounds, and insound (mostly rock and the like), and amazon (mostly pop/rock).

For out of print, eBay actually isn't that bad. Of course it isn't perfect and you're gambling a little, but as long as you don't pay big bucks for something you're probably in good shape.

To start, buy a good carbon fiber brush, and learn how to use it. As well, get a stylus cleaner/brush. Those two are the basics. Both are fundamental to having a record and stylus last as long as possible.

Congratulations on the Rega. Are there used vinyl stores around where you live? There are several in So.Cal., so I'd expect more in any major metro area.

As an aside, I had one and only one experience with NeedleDoctor. I was not impressed, so it was my last.

I agree about the brush!

Two records, eh?

That's plenty for most audiophiles!

Head down to Pasa-effing-dena and go to Poo-Bah's records on Colorado Blvd.

Stop typing right now, and go.

Also, Rockaway Records in Glendale.

And...Amoeba on Sunset.

(Penny Lane in Pasadena is variable, and I haven't been in a while. Lou's records in Encinitas is good...make sure they are still there.)

My buddy Mike and I make special trips from las Vegas just for record hunting at those three!

Go!

Now!

Cheers.

Wow thanks for the replies guys ! One question that has been bugging me..and that is the cartridge. Is it better to take an inexpensive turntable like the P-1 and put in a kick ass cartridge? As you upgrade in cartridges what do you notice (i.e. is it like getting a better CD player with a better DA converter)

the things that have helped my own rega ...

Groovetracer upgrades (subplatter and platter replacement)

and for cartridge, check out the "longhorn mod" ..simple, highly effective tweak...

The groovetracer products aren't made for the P1, and they would cost as much as the TT. (EDIT: I double-checked. My bad - at least some of the products are compatible. But, IMHO, given the price of the P1, you're still probably better off getting a more expensive TT rather than tweaking. Unless you're just itching for a tweak).

On the the cart, from my experience with Regas, you'll experience diminishing returns much more quickly as you approach the value of the TT (at least with the P1 and P2). The cart that comes with the P1 is fine. The Rega Bias would work very well and is really easy to set up - you won't need any VTA adjustment (it worked very well on my P2). Anything more expensive than that and, at least in my estimation, you're kind of waisting the cart. So, in general, I'd stay between $80 and $150. But YMMV.

You'll likely benefit more from a decent phono pre.

actually, they all work with the p1.
That doesnt particularly matter, does it? Ive certainly spent more on modifications to my own gear than the gear itself(at least with my OPPO and the Rega)...the modifications really allow the potential to come through, and I feel that they are worth every single penny. My buddy in Wilmington has a very expensive VPI model, but prefers my modded rega.
