But I find Mahler's first to be something like Dvorak's 9th - namely, there are lots of great recordings, trying to find the definitive one is quite difficult as it appears to be an easier piece to transfer on disc than say his 5th which is much tougher. I am partial to Solti's, Kubelik's on DG, Haitink's and Tennstedt's. Heck, I'll even add Muti's version which isn't bad either. Take your pick there are many. Still, Holt is right Walter was the greatest Mahler interpreter and I would be hard pressed between Solti's version and his.
