I'm not sure if any high-end manufacturers made portables, but Radio Shack sold one that is reportedly excellent.

Cool find! That's a helluva lot of reviews for a Radio Shack component. I like Corey Greenberg calling the commotion over the player "Audiophile Grapevine Jizz"
