"A Penny More," Restless, The Skydiggers

I put this one in so you could hear some of the Cash Brothers in action. It came up in the comments to an earlier blog entry, and was a big reason for wanting to send you this disc. Note: the pop in the beginning is on the CD; maybe something in the master.

This song sounds so familiar. Higher, higher. You take me where I want to go. I suppose I've heard it before — though I don't know for certain, it is possible — but it's more than that. This song feels familiar. This song is a killer. A tormentor.

I will not give you a penny more than you deserve
I don't know why you even bother asking anymore

Resolve without resolution. Listen to that cry, that determined and plaintive cry. How is it that they've married happiness with sadness, joined fury with bliss? Like the sound of the acoustics and the electrics, brass and steel, complimenting each other so well. How?

And that first mean guitar solo at 1:40, it rises into space — higher, higher — and splashes down to nothing — you take me where I want to go. Sounds, wavering sounds.

But if nothing's what you want, you'll get nothing more from me
And if nothing's what you want, you'll get nothing more from me

The Arros capture it all beautifully. Immediately. I'm moved. But, oh, that glitch at precisely 0:51. I wonder why they left it in. It's terribly obvious, and the Arros are absolutely unforgiving. Through them, it's bright and very mechanical. The DeVore gibbons seem to smooth it out a bit, like a pair of firm hands going over a wrinkled sheet.

Higher, higher, you take me where I want to go
Higher, higher, you take me where I want to go

And, still, something about this feels as though he's going against his will. He's gone against his will. No one compares to you, he cries.

And it's true. No one compares. That's always the way it is.
